Fixin’ the Felines

Fixin’ the Felines is a low-cost spay/neuter clinic dedicated to addressing feline overpopulation in our community. Through a collaborative effort between the Corbin Animal Clinic and Forgotten Felines, we provide affordable surgical services to cat owners and caretakers. Our program utilizes streamlined protocols to reduce costs, making spaying and neutering accessible while still prioritizing the safety and well-being of the animals we serve. By participating in Fixin’ the Felines, you’re contributing to a healthier, more manageable feline population in our area.

No, this is a common misconception.  Forgotten Felines simply uses the Corbin Animal Clinic for all our vetting needs.  We have maintained a great relationship with them since we established in 2016.  Their veterinarians and staff understand the serious nature of the feline overpopulation and want to do their part to help.

Is there an age limit or weight limit?

Yes, cats must weigh at least 2lbs and be at least 3 months old. Anesthesia is very risky for anything younger or smaller than this.  Cats that are over 7 years of age are recommended to have a blood panel done prior to anesthesia.  This blood panel can be purchased after registration on the confirmation page.

What if my cat is in heat or pregnant?

Your cat can still be spayed regardless if they are in heat or pregnant, and we encourage you to do so.  If your cat is currently nursing, the kittens will need to be weaned before we spay the mother.

When will I pick up my cat?

Unless otherwise required by the Corbin Animal Clinic, cats will be picked up no earlier than 4:30pm but no later than 7:30pm the same day of surgery. Cats left overnight per owner request will be subject to overnight boarding, that will be charged by the veterinary clinic.

Does my cat need to be fasted?

Yes, do not give your cat any food/treats after 10pm the night before the surgery. A small amount of water is ok.

Does my cat need to be in a carrier?

Yes, all cats are required to be confined in a carrier, with a blanket/towel or some sort of padding.  Your cat will recover from anesthesia in their carrier. Cats that do not come in a carrier will be turned away without refund.

    • Carriers are required to be labeled with the owner name, phone number, and cats name.

Will there be additional services?

Yes, once you pay for your registration you will be redirected to another page for additional services such as nail trims, microchipping, pain medication to be given at home etc.

Will my cat have stitches that need to be removed?

No, there will not be any sutures that need to be removed. You will need to check your cats incision daily for at least 10 days for properly healing, if any redness or swelling is observed please contact your veterinarian.

Will my cat need an e-collar?

Some cats need an e-collar to keep them from licking/chewing at their incision site.  We do not provide those.  The clinic may have collars to purchase, but they can also be purchased at places like Walmart, Tractor supply, and Petsense.

What are the after-care instructions for my cat?

Each cat will be emailed discharge instructions describing after care instructions.  Cats need to be kept confined for at least the night in a warm area.  Some cats, especially female may leave slightly sedated, those cats should be fully recovered by the next morning if they are not you will need to seek medical attention. There is always a risk to anesthesia/surgery, if you feel your cat isn’t recovering properly it is your responsibility to seek out medical attention.

Informed Consent and Standard of Care

By registering and submitting payment for the low-cost spay or neuter surgery through the following links, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to the following statement: Informed Consent and Standard of Care, and that the act of registering and payment, acts as your signature to this document.

I understand that the surgery is being performed at a reduced cost due to the collaboration between the Clinic and Rescue. This low-cost program necessitates a different protocol for anesthesia, pain management, and other aspects of care compared to standard in-clinic procedures.

Examples of Differences in Care:

    • Anesthesia: In the low-cost program, anesthesia is typically administered via injection only, using a different drug protocol than what is used in standard clinic procedures. This differs from the clinic’s standard practice, which includes intravenous (IV) catheter placement, induction, and maintenance with gas anesthesia.
    • Intubation: Cats undergoing surgery in the low-cost program will not be intubated, whereas in standard practice, the cat would have an endotracheal tube placed.
    • Monitoring: Due to resource limitations in the low-cost program, continuous monitoring equipment (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) is not used during the procedure. This contrasts with the clinic’s standard practice of continuous monitoring during surgery.
    • Pain Management: Pain management protocols may be streamlined in the low-cost program compared to standard in-clinic procedures.

The veterinarian will perform the surgery to the best of their ability based on the limitations of the low-cost program. However, there is no guarantee of the outcome, and there are inherent risks associated with anesthesia and surgery, including but not limited to: allergic reaction to anesthesia, infection, bleeding, complications during surgery, and death.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

In the event of cardiac arrest during the surgery, the veterinarian will attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for a period of ten (10) minutes. During this time, all attempts will be made to contact the owner at the phone number provided during the registration process.

Discovery of Pregnancy During Surgery

In the unforeseen event that the veterinarian discovers the animal is pregnant during surgery, the surgery will be continued, and any fetus(es) will be aborted. This is necessary to ensure the health of the mother.

Release of Liability

By completing the registration and payment process, I acknowledge and agree to the following:

    • I have been informed of the risks associated with the surgery and the different standard of care provided in the low-cost program.
    • I voluntarily consent to the surgery being performed on my animal by the Clinic and its staff, including the possibility of abortion of any fetus(es) discovered during surgery.
    • I release the Clinic, its veterinarians, technicians, staff, Forgotten Felines, and their representatives from any and all liability arising from the surgery, including but not limited to, death, injury, or illness of my animal.
    • I understand that I am responsible for all costs associated with any unforeseen complications or additional procedures required during or after the surgery.

Post-Surgical Care

I understand that I am responsible for providing proper post-surgical care for my animal as instructed by the Clinic staff. This may include administering medications, monitoring the incision site, and restricting activity.

Additional Services

I understand that additional services, such as pre-operative bloodwork or pain medication beyond the basic protocol, may be recommended by the veterinarian. These additional services will be charged separately.

Discovery of Opposite Sex During Surgery

In the unforeseen event that the veterinarian discovers the animal’s sex is opposite to what was originally scheduled (e.g., neutering a male cat instead of a female), the surgery will be adjusted to the appropriate procedure (e.g., neutering instead of spaying) to ensure the animal’s health. This adjustment will be made without further consent from the owner.

Emergency Care

In the event of an emergency requiring additional treatment beyond the scope of the surgery, I authorize the Clinic to provide such treatment, and I understand that I will be responsible for all associated costs.

Ownership and Disclaimer of Warranty

I represent and warrant that I am the sole owner (or authorized caretaker) of the animal and have the full right and authority to consent to the surgery. The Clinic and Rescue make no warranties of any kind, express or implied, regarding the surgery or the animal’s health.

Entire Agreement

This form constitutes the entire agreement between the parties with respect to the subject matter hereof and supersedes all prior or current communications, representations, or agreements, whether oral or written. This form shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Kentucky.

Opportunity for Questions and Understanding

By registering and paying for this service, I acknowledge that I have had the opportunity to ask any and all questions regarding the surgical procedure, the differences in standard of care, and the associated risks. I confirm that I fully understand the information provided in this document and am satisfied with the explanations given.

Right to Update
